Introduction:

The employment survey is one  of the surveys conducted by the Department of Statistics (DOS).   The Department of Statistics began to provide data in this field since 1967 as the information provided by this survey is vital concerning number of workers, their characterizations and  compensations according to economic activity of the surveyed establishments.

The study results are required many parties, therefore the study undergone continuous checking and revision to fulfill the purpose and to cape up with the latest international definitions and classicfictions.

Historical Background:

The Employment Survey is one of the economic survey conducted by the Department of Statistics in all governorates. Data relating to the Employment Survey began to be collected in 1967.  The establishments study according to number of employees passed the rough four stages:

1.      The First Stage:

The study began in establishments employing 25 workers or more.

2.      The Second Stage:

It included establishments employing 10-24 workers.

3.      The Third Stage:

It included establishments employing 5 workers or more till 1999 where data was collected from all establishments in the kingdom (based on frame sample).  Data was collected every month are published quarterly, then it was collected every 4 months and finally once every years in October because it is the reference month.

The Department of Statistics revised continuously the survey questionnaire in order to achieve the objectives and conform to latest international definitions and classic fictions the purpose of which is to create a wide data base for serving planners and parties interested in the labour force.

The study was based on frame which was prepared and gathered from many sources such as:

1.      censuses conducted previously by DOS such as the industrial census, the population and Housing Units census and the establishments census.

2.      various economic survey implemented by DOS.

3.      Ministry of Labour.

4.      Social Security.

5.      chamber of Industry& Trade.

6.      Grand Amman Municipality and Various municipalities  in the kingdom.

 

Objectives of the Survey:

The employment Survey aims in general to:

A)    providing data on number of establishments and number of workers in the public as well as private sectors and in various economic activities except for those working in the armed forces, public security and civil Defense as follows:

1.   Mining and Querying.

2.   Manufacturing.

3.   Electricity, gas and water supplies.

4.   Construction.

5.  Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles.

6.   Hotels and restaurants.

7.  transport, storage and communications.

8.  Financial intermediation.

9.   Real estate, renting and business activities.

10. Public administration and compulsory social security.

11. Education

12. Health and Social work.

13. Other community, Social and personal service activities.

B)    providing data on member of permanent and temporary employees by profession, sex, nationality and educational level.

C)    Providing data on employees compensations and other in kind benefits.

D)   Providing data on average paid working house.

 

Survey Coverage:

To achieve the survey objectives, a frame was adopted and was updated continuously.  Many methods were employed to achieve the frame (previously mentioned).  The sample was withdrawn from the frame in order to be totally representatative as follows:

a.       Establishments chosen on the basis of comprehensive surveying which employ 50 person or more.

b.      50% of establishments employing 25-49.

c.      20% of establishments employing 10-24.

d.      10% of establishments employing 5-9.

Finally, the survey sample was withdrawn from establishments employing one person or more by the sampling specialist at DOS.
