National Exports decrease by 15.4 % and imports by 22.3% during the first seven months of 2009

       The statistical data issued by the Department of Statistics indicate a decrease in the value of national exports by 15.4 % during the first seven months of 2009and there was a drop in the re-exports by 16.3 % compared with the same period of 2008.The value of imports has decreased also by 22.3% during the first seven months of 2009.

   The deficit in the trade balance, which is calculated by deducting the value of imports from the value of total exports, has dropped by 27.4 % during the first seven months of 2009 as compared to the same period of 2008, therefore the imports coverage by exports stood at 46.8 %, meanwhile the imports coverage by exports was 43.1 % for the same period of 2008, which means an increase by 3.7 percentage points. The imports coverage by exports during July 2009 was 34.3 %; meanwhile the imports coverage by exports was 43.4% for the same month of 2008 (i.e. a decrease by 9.1 percentage points).

As for commodities, the main exported items that witnessed a decrease in their prices were the apparel and related accessories, pharmaceutical products, crude potash, fertilizers and vegetables, while there was an increase in the prices of crude phosphates. Meanwhile, there was a decrease in Jordan’s imports of crude oil, machinery and electrical appliances, cereals and iron and its products while there was an increase in the imports value of vehicles, motorcycles and its products.

Regarding trade with the main partners, there was a decrease in the national export to non-Arab Asian countries part of which is India.  There was a retreat also in the national export to the Greater Arab Trade Zone countries and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) countries due to the retreat of the exports to the United State of America, and the European Union countries part of which is Holland.

           There was a notable decrease in the imports from the Greater Arab Trade Zone countries especially Saudi Arabia who is the main source of crude oil imports in addition to the European Union countries and the non-Arab Asian countries part of which is China. In contrast, there was an increase in imports from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) countries part of which is the United States of America (USA).
