The Department of
statistics (DOS) is embarking on a national project to build a structure and
comprehensive Input-Output (I/O) Tables for the Jordanian economy.
The Input-Output Tables are considered as an important statistical and analytical tool in depicting the national economy, sectoral interdependencies, economic linkages and developmental potentials. They provide a framework for recording and assessing the consistency of statistics on flows of goods and services obtained from the different statistical sources, industrial surveys, household expenditure survey, investment surveys, foreign trade statistics, government statistical records, etc. The Input-Output Tables in particular, serve both; as a coordinating framework for economic statistics, hence ensuring the consistency of the definitions and classifications used; and as an accounting framework for ensuring the quantitative consistency of macro and sectoral data drawn from different sources.
The Input-Output framework is also an appropriate tool to derive and structure the socio-economic data contained in the national accounts system through deriving and formation of a national Social Accounts Matrix (SAM), and revealing gaps and weaknesses. This is particularly important for the decomposition of values of flows of goods and services into prices and volumes for the calculation of an integrated set of price and volume measures. As an analytical tools, Input-Output Tables are used as a comprehensive base for variety of integrated macroeconomic and other significant interactive development models that normally used as effective instruments to draw and articulate, amongst other; development planning priorities, investment strategies and programme; socio-economic and poverty impact analysis and measures; decision-making alternative policies and scenarios implication; and a comprehensive catalyst for future statistics and national information settings.
The DOS has inauguration a project management unit to run this 1.2 million JD, project will be executed over 2-years period. A national steering committee will be formulate as well as a national team at the technical level.
