Average decrease of inflation for the first eleven months of 2009
The monthly report on inflation in Jordan issued by the Department of Statistics indicates a decrease in the Consumer Price Average during the first eleven months of 2009 by 1.0% as compared with the same period of 2008. The main commodities groups, which contributed to this decrease, were ” Transport” (15.7 %),“Fuel and Electricity” (12.3%),” Vegetables” (6.5%), “Fruit“(5.5%) and “Diary and its products and Eggs “(2.7%). Meanwhile the main commodities groups which witnessed an increase in their prices were” Education” (6.7%), “Meat and Poultry” (5.7%) “Cereals and its Products” (10.8%) and “Cloths and Footwear” (6.2%).
The report shows also an increase in the Consumer Price Average during November 2009 by (0.6 %) as compared with October 2009. The main commodities groups, which contributed to this increase, were " Transport" (1.5%)” Meat and Poultry” (2.0%)," Clothes and Footwear" (1.9%), " Fuel and Electricity" ( 1.2%) and " Personal Care" (1.4%). Meanwhile, the main commodities group whose prices have decreased were “Oils and Fats”(1.1%), “Home appliances” (0.2%), “Fruits” (0.1 %) and “Other foods” (0.1%).
The Consumer Price Average of November 2009 has decreased by (1.5%) compared with November 2008. The main commodities groups, which contributed to this decrease, were “Transport” (8.3 %), “Fuel and Electricity” (8.9 %), " Vegetables" (13.6) “Fruit” (16.5 %),and ” Diary and its products and Egg” (6.9 %). Meanwhile, the main commodities groups whose prices have witnessed an increase in their prices, were “Education” (6.7%), “Sugar and its products” (12.7), " Personal Care" (7.9%) and “Cereals and its products” (6.2%).
It is worthy to mention that these figures were computed taking 2006 as a base year. The prices data are collected by the Department of Statistics monthly through a sample that includes (3786) commercial shops distributed all over the Kingdom’s governorates covering the prices of (851) commodities. The vegetables, fruits, meats, poultry and gold prices are collected four times monthly at the rate of one time every week. Meanwhile, the other commodities prices are collected one time monthly. For computing the price index, the (DOS) uses weights for different commodities based on the results of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2006. All prices are collected with their relative weights to derive the consumer price index by using (LASPEURE) formula.
