National exports
rise by 8.5% during 2007
The statistical data issued by the Department of Statistics indicate a rise in the value of the national exports by 8.5% and the re-exports by 13.3% during the 2007 compared with 2006. In contrast, the value of imports has risen by 17.2% during the same period.
The deficit in the trade balance, which is calculated by deducting the value of imports from the value of total exports, has risen by 23.4% during 2007 as compared to 2006, therefore the imports coverage by the exports stood at 42.1%during 2007.
As for commodities, the main exported items were vegetables, pharmaceutical products, phosphates,fertilizers and potash, while there was a retreat in the apparel and related accessories. Meanwhile, there was a rise in Jordan’s imports of cereals, crude oil, iron, machinery and electrical appliances against a retreat in the imports of vehicles and motorcycles.
Regarding trade with the main partners, there was a rise in the national exports to Asian countries, especially India and the Greater Arab Trade Zone part of which is Iraq. On the other hand, there was a retreat in the national exports to North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) countries that resulted from the retreat in exports to the United States of America (USA).
There was a notable rise in the imports from the European Union countries and Asian countries against a retreat in the imports from the Grater Arab Trade Zone countries especially Saudi Arabia who is the main crude oil exporter to Jordan.The most important exported and imported commodities during the first eleven months of 2006 and 2007
