5.1% the average decrease in Agricultural Producers Prices during November 2009

The data issued by the Department of Statistics indicate a decrease in the average agricultural producers’ price index by (5.1%) during November 2009 as compared with November 2008, (2007=100). The most significant crops, which contributed to this decrease, were tomatoes whose prices have decreased by( 72.8) %, string beans (40.8 %), cabbage (37.0%), radish(29.6%), lemon (22.1%), eggplant (19.8%),grape fruit (12.8%) and orange (2.0%) with a relative importance of 36.4%.While there was an increase in the prices of chilies, squash, pomes, potato, cauliflower, Clementine,  paprika, cucumber, banana and maize by 132.9%,67.6%,66.0%,51.6%,34.2%,30.9%,23.1%,16.8%,5.9% and 3.8% respectively.

         The data also show that the price index of agricultural producers has increased in November 2009 as compared with October 2009 by 9.9%. The price index of agricultural producers reached 108.3 in November 2009 as compared with 98.2 for October 2009. This has resulted from an increase in the prices of some commodities with a relative importance of 48.3 %. The most significant crops, which contributed to this increase, were chilies by 66.8%, eggplants 48.3%, cucumber 46.5%, squash 30.9%, maize 29.4%, string beans 13.9%, tomatoes 3.1%, pomes 1.9% and paprika 0.1%. Meanwhile, the prices of cabbage, radish, lemon, cauliflower, grape fruit, orange, Clementine and banana decreased by (51.2%), (35.7%), (30.6%), (18.9%), (14.9%), (11.7%), (10.8%) and (8.6%) respectively with a relative importance of 51.7 %.

        On the accumulative aspect, the price index of agricultural producers has decreased for the first eleven months of 2009 as compared with the same period of 2008 by (16.1%), noting that the price index reached 98.8 compared with 117.8 for the same period of 2008. The most significant crops, which contributed to this decrease, were tomatoes by (35.5%), cucumber (32.9 %), eggplant (25.5%), cauliflower (21.6%), string beans (17.9%), squash (13.8%), paprika (9.4%), chilies (7.7%) and banana by (4.1%), meanwhile the potato prices has risen by 5.5%.

          It is worthy to mention that the data on agricultural prices are collected by the Department of Statistics every month through a sample of (827) agricultural holders covering Al-Aghwar (Jordan Valley) and the heights areas due to difference in the agricultural pattern in each of them by using a special questionnaire for this purpose and the (LASPEURE) formula to derive the price index, noting that the 2007 is the base year.
