The Crop Production Survey
Department of Statistics compiles yearly the crop production survey
for a sample of about 8000 holdings distributed in the Jordan Valley and the
Up-lands through several field rounds.
Main Objectives of the Survey
This Survey aims at:
1. Estimating the planted area
2. Estimating the area utilized in growing winter and summer vegetables, tree crops and field crops
3. Estimating the harvested area under field crops
4. Estimating the production of various crops
5. Estimating the number of bearing trees
6. Estimating the size of agricultural labour, and the percentage of non-Jordanian labour
7. Estimating the contribution of crop production to the GDP.
Scope of the Survey
The survey focuses on the crop and mixed holdings in the Jordan Valley
and the Up-lands, taking into consideration only those holdings which have an
area equal to or more than one dunum (1000 sq m) of land.
Sample Design
1. The Jordan Valley:
The systematic sampling technique was adopted for the organized agricultural
units in the Jordan Valley, while the simple random sample technique was used
for the non-organized holdings selecting about 25% of them.
2. The Up-lands:
All big holdings which have an area of more than 500 dunums were completely
enumerated. For the other holdings the stratified multi-stage sampling
technique was adopted. The up-lands was divided into 19 strata. For the first
stage (psu) a sample of villages was selected in each stratum. For the second
stage (ssu) a sample of holdings was selected in each village of the village
sample.
